A Midsummer's Day Update

Beats a Midsommer's Day update

I guess it’s actually a late summer’s day update now, but I started this in July, when it was still mid summer. But hey, it’s August now, so, let’s get to what’s going on!

  • I joined another anthology project. I need to get started writing, but the idea is to use it to write a Bog Hag story and get some background on Bezz and Bog Hag. I still like these characters and think they’d make a good webcomic, it’s just hard to find the time. Or, I guess, it’s hard to figure out how to regularly schedule and update an ongoing saga about finding an old lady from a bog a house when life keeps life-ing. One day!

  • The anthology will be digital only, and out sometime late in 2026. I’ll keep you posted.

In other news, I think it’s time for a reboot art wise. I’m in a slump, and I am not producing anything. I realized it’s because I keep trying to guess what other people will want to see, and falling short. So, I’ve decided to stop doing that.

My portfolio needs a good refresh anyway, and with SCBWI’s local East and North Bay in person conference coming up in a few months, what better time than now to clarify my goals? I also signed up to have a portfolio review with a local illustrator, so, I really need some new work!

On that note, I have started to realize most of my ideas are for adult audiences, in that they deal with everyday life topics that would appeal to adults more than children. (Rather than the OTHER kind of adult, which I very much do not draw) Children do not yet know they Sisyphean tasks that await the rest of their existence, like dishes and laundry.

To support that work, I have been busy building a new Patreon, although I admit that I hit pause once I heard they were going to start allowing AI art. I’m not sure if there’s a viable alternative though. Ko-fi doesn’t have the same subscriber options, and a lot of other options charge for set up. (I suppose the fees Patreon takes from creators ends up being similar, cost wise, but it feels less spendy up front. I suppose my newsletter is also a available alternative, but I don’t want to charge anyone for it so, I guess I’ll keep pondering.

A glasses wearing man in a dark blue shirt holds up a yellow zine. He is wavingg his other hand over the zine and inhaling deeply, as if to test thee scent bouquet. Zines are like a fine wine in his world.

An example of the tiered art I have already made for my Patreon

Anyway, until next time.
